The Canine Good Citizen Evaluation
The CGC Test:

- The CGC program encourages responsible pet ownership and good manners.
- Working toward earning the CGC designation enhances your relationship with your dog and teaches your dog good manners.
- Canine Good Citizens are welcome almost anywhere because they behave around people and other dogs.
- Earning the CGC award will ensure that your dog is a well-respected member of your community.
- The CGC program provides an excellent foundation for all other training.
- Some therapy dog groups require the CGC designation as a prerequisite for therapy work.
- A number of state legislatures have endorsed the CGC concept.
- What is Canine Good Citizen?
- The CGC program is a means of rewarding dogs who are well-behaved companions at home and in the community.
- The goals of the CGC program are

- teach responsible dog ownership
- reward owners that provide basic training to their dogs and reward dogs that have good manners.
- The CGC test is noncompetitive and dogs are not required to perform with the same precision required in formal obedience.
- Dogs that pass all 10 items of the CGC test, including purebred and mixed breeds, are listed in the CGC records at the American Kennel Club.
- The CGC test is a certification program that tests dogs in simulated everyday situations in a relaxed, noncompetitive atmosphere.
- The CGC program rewards dogs that have the training and demeanor to be reliable family members as well as community members in good standing.

Canine Good Citizen Testing:
- performed by an in-house certified evaluator
- Cost is $20
- includes an official CGC tag upon completion
- cost is included in the tuition for the CGC/TD Prep Class
Next Test Date: March 11, 2010 starting at 5:45 pm, please contact us to schedule a time slot for your dog.
- Please e-mail kca@blairanimalclinic.com or call 463-2611 to sign-up for a testing date.
- All dogs must be up-to-date on all required vaccinations
- All dogs must be on a regular 4-6 ft leash and flat buckle-style collar. (unfortunately, harnesses and gentle leaders are not permitted by AKC)
- Please bring your dog's brush/comb
- Treats may not be used during the test
- The tests are done in a group setting, every participant must bring a friend or family member to be a volunteer "friendly stranger" during the testing. If you do not bring someone you will not be allowed to test. Please note that children can be distracting for some dogs.

Canine Good Citizen "Mock" Testing:
- A group run-through of the actual test, done for practice!
- Cost is $15
- Next Mock-Test Date: TBA

- For the best practice, dogs should be on a 4-6 ft. leash and regular, flat collar. Treats and clickers may not be used in an official test.
